Juu Jääb

Summer is the season people use for holiday in Estonia. So it is very hard to write blog posts. Lots of live events and photos are piling up. So with delay I will write about couple events I have been to.

From 26th of June till 28th of June was Juu Jääb Future Music Festival on Estonian Island Muhu. It is mostly Jazz festival that takes place in Estonian musician Villu Veski's old farmhouse. Muhu has beautiful historic Estonian country setting that makes this festival unique. Setup offers more intimate contact between artists and public.

Line up this year was from classical traditional jazz to hop-hop. We heard Latin sounds and jam sessions were great. Personal favorite on this event was Napoleon Maddox with ISWAT QUARTET. Hip-Hop with clean message, super great band and naturally Napoleons talent.

All in all I loved event and it will be in my calendar for ever year.

Street music

Sometimes street music is interesting. Too bad that we have it so little in Tallinn. Something to do with local government regulating it. Old Tallinn could be even more interesting with live music. Where else you see clarinet player juggling with ball while playing ?! I love wired and interesting characters :)

Hip-Hop Kitchen Party

This week went to pre release party of Estonian Hip-Hop band ToeTag newest album. They called it "kitchen party" and it was for friends and other notable individuals. I never had deep interest to this kind of music even that I had good friends among London Rap crowd and met a few in Latin America. One thing that I liked about all these people was that they were all rebels and always had in their music crisp critical message in lyrics. When I was in school we had punk now younger generation has Hip-Hop. Count out these artists that do way over commercial hop-hop, singing about whores and pimping. That's what I call bad taste.

ToeTag also have on album song about corruption and interesting song about plastic bag that has message against pollution. Band does music in Estonian language but you can find out more about them here.

Light was bad for photography. Others were using flash so I took out my Nikon SB-900, did few shots but they were not what I wanted. Place had high ceiling and dark walls, no place to bounce flash off from. I tried to use diffuser, played with flash power but results were not all that good. So I went back to what I like best, shooting without flash. Mostly I was using my 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Photos are here.

ART of Trio

Went to  Relax Cafe    on 20.03.2009. It is a new place in town for all  jazz lovers. Nice spacious place that offers food and comfortable seating. Ideal place for small parties with friends enjoying food, few drinks and great music Specifically I went to listen cosmopolitan band that calls themselves ART of Trio that is made up from artists: Brian Melvin - Drums  Toivo Unt - Double Bass Ryo Kawasaki - Guitar Toivo is an old school Estonian base player. Brian is originally from USA, Ryo is originally from Japan(and NY), both now living in Estonia. As always with these artists I had a great time and totally relaxing music experience in relaxing atmosphere in Relax Cafe :) I heard a few John Coltrane pieces and other good old fashioned jazz. Excitement also was when Ryo broke one of strings in guitar during play. He said that had not happened more than 40 years :) See video bellow as it happened. As for photography it was terrible. It was pitch dark as Brian Melvin asked sound guy to turn down all lights  so there would be more club like atmosphere. Well I guess he was right, got to have cozy atmosphere in club. In any case I cranked up ISO in camera and got some ok images even at ISO 1600 and 3200. The spot Ryo was standing had really horrible changing light, he was blue, green , red and so on. So I ended up turning some of his pictures into monochrome. Also video bellow has horrible rolling shutter as in low light D90 can do that. This is generally problem when trying to make video with DSLR in low light and hopefully it will be improved in future models. In fact I hope it can be improved with firmware update! Genka Live at Rehab

Went to see Genka at event called Rehab in Tallinn. It was Estonian hip-hop party that was refreshing and interesting. Few interesting subjects to take picture of. You can see some pics in gallery. I was also testing my new  Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens and I totally loved it ! If you need to shoot in low light, have best possible quality and you can deal with high price it is totally worth it. Did also a few video clips but the sound is useless thanks to big bassline . So now I need to figure out how to record audio externally and sync with video picture.
